JWST rug, made from 100% New Zealand wool in my solar powered studio.

Many moons ago, before I started my PhD in astronomy, I remember going to a talk about JWST at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh. The speaker used an overhead projector to shine a hexagon on the wall which was 1.32 metres across - the same size as each of JWST’s mirrored panels. The mirrors on my handmade rug version are a little smaller - a scale of 1:8.125, to be precise!

Each of these rugs started its life on a big piece of cotton canvas stretched across my handmade rug frame. I precisely mark out each of the 18 panels on the canvas, then set to work 'tufting' the design. It takes a lot of practise to get a uniform yarn density! I use high-quality New Zealand wool which has been treated to resist moths and other critters. This yarn is naturally dirt-resistant and water-repellent, but it's still a good idea to keep it in a clean, dry room. Once the design is complete I remove the rug from the frame and treat the back to keep the yarn in place. I apply a 100% cotton backing to protect the back of the yarn work, and package it up in recycled packaging for its journey to your home.

This rug is made from high-quality New Zealand wool which has been treated to resist moths and other critters. This yarn is naturally dirt-resistant and water-repellent, but it's still a good idea to keep it in a clean, dry room. It's made from natural fibres and isn't indestructible! Any spills should be immediately blotted with a clean cloth, then spot clean with your preferred wool cleaner.
