New for 2021: I’m so proud to be able to offer this new design in a wider range of sizes. They’re made in small batches in the EU by my new favourite family-owned company.
During my undergraduate degree I had the opportunity to take a course on atmospheric physics and meteorology, which I found fascinating! As it happens, I also took a Spanish course, but that wouldn’t make such a good pair of scientifically accurate socks. Anyway…
The Earth’s atmosphere has been categorised by scientists into five different layers, or ‘strata’, each with distinctive characteristics. I designed these socks to show a cross-section through these layers, with examples of some of the things you might find in each zone. The altitude of each layer is 100% accurate; I’ve used a log scale to make sure your socks are a sensible height…!
Troposphere: The layer closest to the Earth’s surface is called the Troposphere and extends to about 12km above sea level. This is where you’ll be if you’re flying in a commercial aeroplane because it has the perfect combination of sort-of-thin-but-not-too-thin air to make flight efficient.
Stratosphere: Stretching from about 12km - 50km above sea level, the Stratosphere is probably best known as a synonym for ‘that thing that’s really, really high up’. It’s also the layer of the atmostphere in which Concorde flew.
Mesosphere: The Mesosphere is often grouped with the Stratosphere under the very creative title of ‘the middle atmosphere’. Scientists, eh?! You’ll find weather balloons around the Stratopause, which is the boundary between the Stratosphere and the Mesosphere. The Mesosphere is also home to around 40,000 tonnes’ worth of meteors each year - take a look at the back of the socks!
Thermosphere: This is where the really cool stuff is; the Thermosphere is between about 80km and 700km above sea level. This is where you’ll find the International Space Station, which orbits at a height of around 410km. There are also plenty of low-Earth orbit satellites in this zone, and you can see an example of one on the back of these socks!
I designed these luxury socks in my solar powered French studio, and they are manufactured by a small independent company in the EU. Their high cotton content means that they’re super soft and of the highest quality. The toe is seamlessly joined and the cuff features a wide, soft rib to keep you comfortable all day long.

Roman Telescope pendant earrings
This is the newest piece in my new collection which pays tribute to some of the coolest telescopes around (which all started with my old favourite, the Lovell Telescope). It shows the silver sun shade of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in shiny mirrored perspex, and comes in a Cepheid Studio-branded gift box. The real Roman Space Telescope is far too big to fit on an earring, so this version is at a scale of approximately 1:3000!

Each of these earrings started its life on my computer. I digitally drew each of the telescope's elements and other earring components, then translated the designs into files that can be read by my laser cutter. This machine is the focus of my studio, and I’ve spent years hacking and tweaking it to perfection. I laser cut, assemble and polish the piece, before attaching the silver-plated earring hooks. I then carefully place them on a backing card in a Cepheid Studio branded gift box, ready for wrapping and sending to you, its new owner!

Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System, so it barely fits on this handy A6-sized notepad!

Lagoon Nebula Notepad (A6) - printed in France on recycled paper

The Lagoon Nebula is a star-forming region about 4000 light years away. It’s so bright that it can just about be seen from Earth if you use binoculars…although it’ll look a bit like a fuzzy smudge on the sky! This high-resolution photo was taken by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3.

Notepad - The Moon (A6) - printed in France on recycled paper

The moon is almost as old as the Earth, at around 4.5 billion years old. Most scientists believe that it probably formed when an asteroid hit the Earth and a big chunk of rock was fired off into space. It didn't make it out of the Earth's gravitational field though, and has continued to orbit ever since. The dents and craters you can see on the moon (and in this pin badge!) are evidence that the moon has been pummeled by all manner of space debris over its lifetime. It doesn't have an atmosphere like the Earth, so anything flying through space just smacks into it, instead of being burned up in an atmosphere. Poor moon!

Notepad - Galaxy NGC 4298 (A6) - printed in France on recycled paper

NGC 4298 is a dusty spiral galaxy that just happens to be almost face-on when viewed from the Earth. We can tell it contains a lot of young stars because of it’s blue-ish tint; in general, young stars appear blue whilst old stars appear red.
