Planets necklace

Planets necklace
Solar system necklace, laser cut in cherry wood showing all eight 'official' planets (Pluto optional).
The minimalist design and use of negative space means that the colour of your clothes will show through the planet-shaped holes, so the necklace will look a little different each time you wear it!
I designed this statement necklace shortly after finishing my PhD in Astrophysics! It combines my love of science and laser cut jewellery. I hope you love it as much as I do. As a scientist, I love accuracy. That's why on this necklace, the sizes of the planets are drawn exactly to scale.
Have you ever wondered why the planets are all in a line? That's because they originally formed from a disc of material that was rotating around the Sun. Over time, this material started to clump together to form the planets we see today. Pluto is the one exception, and this is one of the reasons it had it's 'planetary status' removed in 2006, so it's not featured on this version of the necklace. If you're still a Pluto fan though, never fear! I also make a version of this necklace with all the nine planets you grew up knowing.

Roman Telescope pendant earrings
This is the newest piece in my new collection which pays tribute to some of the coolest telescopes around (which all started with my old favourite, the Lovell Telescope). It shows the silver sun shade of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in shiny mirrored perspex, and comes in a Cepheid Studio-branded gift box. The real Roman Space Telescope is far too big to fit on an earring, so this version is at a scale of approximately 1:3000!

Each of these earrings started its life on my computer. I digitally drew each of the telescope's elements and other earring components, then translated the designs into files that can be read by my laser cutter. This machine is the focus of my studio, and I’ve spent years hacking and tweaking it to perfection. I laser cut, assemble and polish the piece, before attaching the silver-plated earring hooks. I then carefully place them on a backing card in a Cepheid Studio branded gift box, ready for wrapping and sending to you, its new owner!
If you’re buying these earrings as a gift I can include your gift message in the parcel and send it straight to the recipient.

Jupiter Astronomy Notepad (A6) - printed in France on recycled paper
Link for UK customers here
Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System, so it barely fits on this handy A6-sized notepad!
These 50-sheet notepads are printed on 100% recycled paper and are backed with 100% recycled cardstock. They are printed in the EU and travel by land from my printers’ workshop to Cepheid Studio. Every step of this process, including the transport, has been carbon offset and declared carbon neutral by ClimatePartner. The printing company I have chosen to work with is dedicated not only to reducing carbon emissions, but also to supporting climate protection projects both in the EU and worldwide. You can read more about it here: https://fpm.climatepartner.com/tracking/15064-2009-1001/en
About the notepads
----------------------------
These notepads are made from 80gsm recycled paper, on a recycled card backboard.
They’re A6 size (10.5cm x 14.8cm) and contain 50 identical sheets.

Lagoon Nebula Notepad (A6) - printed in France on recycled paper
Link for UK customers here
The Lagoon Nebula is a star-forming region about 4000 light years away. It’s so bright that it can just about be seen from Earth if you use binoculars…although it’ll look a bit like a fuzzy smudge on the sky! This high-resolution photo was taken by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3.

Notepad - The Moon (A6) - printed in France on recycled paper
Link for UK customers here
The moon is almost as old as the Earth, at around 4.5 billion years old. Most scientists believe that it probably formed when an asteroid hit the Earth and a big chunk of rock was fired off into space. It didn't make it out of the Earth's gravitational field though, and has continued to orbit ever since. The dents and craters you can see on the moon (and in this pin badge!) are evidence that the moon has been pummeled by all manner of space debris over its lifetime. It doesn't have an atmosphere like the Earth, so anything flying through space just smacks into it, instead of being burned up in an atmosphere. Poor moon!

Notepad - Galaxy NGC 4298 (A6) - printed in France on recycled paper
Link for UK customers here
NGC 4298 is a dusty spiral galaxy that just happens to be almost face-on when viewed from the Earth. We can tell it contains a lot of young stars because of it’s blue-ish tint; in general, young stars appear blue whilst old stars appear red.
